Fitness Metrics Syncing

The Problem

I wanted to sync my Garmin Connect metrics with my account on MyFitnessPal so that I could accurately and automatically track my calories burned on a daily basis when I use my Garmin FR220.

Before I initially purchased my Garmin FR220 I read a great indepth review about it on DC Rainmaker. After I purchased it, I was very satisfied.

Garmin FR220

It allowed me to track my runs as I needed and it provided me with an approximation for calories expended during each run. I wanted the ability to have that automatically put into my calorie counting app, MyFitnessPal.

While MyFitnessPal and Garmin Connect had some sort of third party integration, it wasn’t working for me. I wasn’t able to get the calorie expenditure into the MyFitnessPal app on my phone. My Garmin FR220 would connect to the Garmin Connect app on my Android and sync via bluetooth, but the data wasn’t getting over to the MyFitnessPal app.

The Solution

I headed back over to DC Rainmaker’s website and found just the article I was looking for “3 Ways to Automatically Copy Your Garmin Training Data to Other Fitness Sites“. I tried the first approach he discussed, syncing via Tapiriik.

I just needed to setup sync into another app that worked better with MyFitnessPal. I setup an account with RunKeeper, which would act as the holding location for my running metrics that I recorded with my Garmin FR220 via Garmin Connect.

I added both the Garmin Connect and newly created RunKeeper accounts to tapiriik. After that I added RunKeeper as an integration via the MyFitnessPal app and viola, the data came pouring in just like I originally wanted.

I am now able to sync my calories burned during my runs automatically as tracked on my Garmin FR220 into the MyFitnessPal app via Garmin Connect -> tapiriik -> RunKeeper -> MyFitnessPal. The only issue is that I have to go to the tapiriik website and press the sync button each time I have new data to sync between Garmin and RunKeeper. It is not a huge issue, but it is a free solution and a technique that I would recommend.
